Reflective Summary
In this engineering class I completed multiple assignments which gave me an opportunity to work with others, research and present what I learned to my classmates. While this wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve done it was a necessary experience in order to become a great engineer. I enjoyed this class because of the challenges and the different ways I overcame them. I hope my future engineering classes teach me a wide variety of skills like this one has.
The resume and cover letter being the first assignment made sense to set us up for the rest of the semester. The resume went well because we could talk about it in class but also because I already have one. The checklist for the resume and cover letter were found on blackboard explaining that we needed all oof our education and work experience in reverse chronological order. The cover letter was also a smooth process because I found an internship posting on indeed quickly. The project overall was enjoyable and beneficial because it’s something that can be used in the future.
The lab report was another individual assignment, however, this assignment required more information literacy using the CCNY library. This was the longest part of the assignment because there isn’t a lot of research about the probability of dice rolls. There were also multiple aspects to this assignment because I also had to do the experiment when I rolled the two dice one hundred times. I logged my results on excel and made the graphs to show the data I collected. This was interesting because it gave me a chance to use different tools to synthesize my information into one report. This assignment took me multiple weeks because of how long it took me to remember how to use excel as well as find a scholarly article that supported my findings.
The group proposal was the third assignment and the first group assignment which required us to split up the work and collaborate on our proposal. This assignment was over the course of a month and went smoothly for the most part. My group was able to agree on design ideas pretty quickly leaving us to do our own parts. Farhan did most of the outlining on the google doc and the power point which was extremely helpful, and we all did our parts well. I was responsible for the floor plan, which I enjoyed because I like to design houses. Our group name was the gearheads since we were all engineers, and it worked quite well. Our proposal was to destroy Wingate and have our new student center be the same size. It contained a food court, a gaming room with a social space, and a quiet study room with a meditation room. It only took a rough draft which was me placing the empty boxes of where the restaurants would go. This design was because of the survey we took of CCNY students asking them about what they would like to eat, as well as the kind of facilities they wanted to see in a student center. If this was a real proposal the audience would be the CCNY board in charge of distributing funds and the purpose would be to convince them that CCNY needs a new student center. This being a group project was a nice way to learn more about my groupmates.
The technical description and could have been an individual or group project, I decided to do it by myself because I had a complicated schedule. My major is mechanical engineering, and I decided to do hydroelectric dams because the Francis turbine is a great example of mechanical engineering. Originally, I chose this topic because when I was asked it was the first thing I thought of, but as I researched it, I found it interesting and kept it as my topic. This assignment required me to use canva before I had the poster printed. This project was very time consuming, but it did require to find all the relevant information that includes how it works, the requirements needed to build one, the creators of the major parts involved and the amount of energy they can produce based on their size and synthesize this on my poster. I enjoyed this assignment because we had creative freedom as long as we included what we needed to satisfy the viewers. It also allowed me to work on my public speaking since the presentation was supposed to be eight minutes.
I am taking four other classes which are sociology, anthropology, environmental science, and US history. All of my classes are straight forward with environmental science being hands on and experiment based the other three classes being lectured based with the weekly and bi weekly assignments. Sociology has the occasional group assignment which is a nice change of pace from the weekly lectures. In anthropology we watched movies and videos talking about the type of anthropology we were discussing in class that week. Over all I enjoy my other classes, however, I wish I was taking more classes related to my major since I’m taking calculus one and chemistry one next semester.
Overall this has been an extremely informational class showing me how to write a resume, use a comma, collaborate with others, structure and present a research proposal, and research and write a lab report. I will bring what I learned in this class into the real world expanding my knowledge and giving me real world experience.
